What is Propecia?
Propecia is a medication for men suffering from male pattern baldness in the top of the head and mid-scalp areas.

Important information about Propecia
Propecia is intended for use only in men. This drug needs to be stored in a safe place where women or children will not come in contact with it: In pregnant women, handling the Propecia tablets may lead to birth defects in the developing baby. It is possible, but rare, for men to develop breast cancer while taking this medication. Signs to watch for include: Lumps in the breast area, unusual pain, or nipple discharge.

Before taking Propecia
Discuss your history with your doctor prior to taking Propecia. Be sure to mention any previous experiences with this or a similar drug. Discuss any drug allergies, and any reactions you have experienced to Propecia or a similar medicine. It is especially important that you inform your doctor of any history of liver problems, prostate cancer, urination problems, or any previous issues with the male reproductive system.

How should I take Propecia?
Propecia should be taken according to your doctor’s instructions. Take the drug with a glass of water, and with food if desired. Never take more than instructed, and make sure to take Propecia daily for maximum benefit.

What happens if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take a dose, you may take it upon remembering as long as your next scheduled dosage is not in the next several hours.

What happens if I overdose?
Contact your doctor if you think you may have overdosed. Typically an overdose of Propecia will not produce serious medical problems.

What should I avoid while taking Propecia?
Your doctor will advise you of any individual restrictions, but Propecia will not usually require any special lifestyle accommodations. Some patients find that dizziness can result when they rise quickly from sitting, so avoid rising quickly to alleviate this.

What are the possible side effects of Propecia?
Side effects are uncommon with Propecia. They may include dizziness, swelling in the extremities, testicular pain, headache, cold-like symptoms, and skin rash. Some very rare sexual side effects may occur in about 2% of men taking this drug. These include lessened sex drive, difficulty in achieving an erection, and a decrease in semen production. If you notice signs of breast cancer such as nipple discharge, new lumps, or any change in breast tissue, see your doctor.

What other drugs will affect Propecia?
Some other medications can affect Propecia, but it is rare to see drug interactions with this medication. Your doctor will need a list of all medicines you are currently taking, including over the counter drugs, to check for possible interactions.
