Q: What are Generic Drugs?

A: When a drug company first invents a drug (e.g. Cialis) that company is the only one allowed to make that drug for a certain limited time. After this time period, other companies are allowed to make the same drug. These drugs are called generics. The original drug (e.g. Cialis) is called “brand name”. Brand name and generics are IDENTICAL in terms of active ingredients, the difference is the filler content. Generic pills do look different (because they are made by a different company, with different filler material) but all contain the same active ingredient, which works the same way. Some people don’t like generics medications because they don’t feel as effective, this is because some people have adverse reactions to different filler content.
